Personal, Social, Health and Economic education gives students a chance to discuss areas which directly affect their daily lives in a meaningful way.

Vision:  

The study of PSHE introduces students to a range of topics which will help to broaden their awareness of societal issues and how they impact us individually.  

Intent:  

When studying PSHE students will be given the opportunity to develop knowledge around a variety of topics and issues which they will face in their daily lives. The aim of our PSHE curriculum is to tackle these issues in a thematic way to structure pupil learning in the most effective and appropriate way. The core three themes are:  

1. Health and wellbeing  

2. Living in the wider world 

3. Relationships 

Students will work on these themes throughout their time at the school with topics being introduced early on, revisited and deepened as they continue their journey through the school. The cyclical style of our curriculum is supported by the PSHE Association, which helped to develop key themes and appropriate content for each Key Stage. As you will see on our long-term curriculum map, similar themes appear but would be tackled in the age-appropriate way. This is to ensure the right content is discussed with students that is relevant to their age group.  

As part of the school’s dedication to enrichment the PSHE department run a variety of workshops in these enrichment periods. In the past we have run drop-down days tackling financial health, careers and equality in the United Kingdom. In addition to this, we have proven strong connections with a variety of organisation which deliver talks and run workshops for our students. These organisations include:  

• Victim Support,  

• Kent Fire Education Unit  

• Parliamentary education unit 

• Sapphire Project,  

• Hope Not Hate and many more.  

We believe giving the students a chance to interact with a variety of presenters and organisations will increase aspirations and their awareness of wider societal issues. Our curriculum reflects these issues discussed and will hopefully have a meaningful impact on students’ future behaviours beyond the school setting.

In Key Stage 5, we aim to build upon the PSHE curriculum offered in KS3 and KS4 by developing students’ knowledge of the wider world and preparing them for the contexts which they will be moving into when they leave school. We aim to equip them with the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to thrive in the modern world. We use both RE and PSHE materials to help students to become critical thinkers about the world around them. The core PSHE sessions will be delivered in our Thursday form times and external speakers will deliver additional sessions during our Friday form periods.

Our key intent for PSHE in Key Stage 5 is:

1. To develop students’ sense of vision and aspiration

2. To enable students to develop the organisational systems, attitudes and metacognitive study habits which are associated with academic success

3. To develop students’ health, wellbeing and capacity to form mutually respectful relationships

4. To promote a sense of inclusivity, equality and mutual respect surrounding gender, race and sexual preferences
